Whiteville council to talk SRO, ABC board, fire grant
The Whiteville city council is expected to approve a budget amendment Tuesday night to provide a school resource officer, reappoint a member of the ABC board and approve a grant application by the fire department.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at 24 Hill Plaza.
A $38,000 budget amendment will provide for a school resource officer to be split between Whiteville Primary and Edgewood Elementary Schools. The funds will be paid to the city by the school board and the city will redistribute to policemen accordingly.
Gary Bass has applied for reappointment to the Whiteville ABC board and his reappointment tonight is expected. An 18-year veteran of the board, Bass currently serves as chairman. Council also is expected to name a chairman tonight for the three-member board.
The board also will consider a request by Fire Chief David Yergeau to apply for a FEMA grant of $247,000 for 18 self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCUBA), 36 SCUBA bottles and 36 SCUBA masks. If the grant application is successful,the city will have to make a five percent local match of $12,350.
