City schools honor teachers of the year, perfect-attendance students

The Whiteville Board of Education at their July meeting recognized a 2018-2019 teacher of the year from each of the city’s five schools, then revealed the recipient of the city-wide honor.
Each honoree had been chosen by her teaching colleagues at her campus. Jonnetta Brown was teacher of the year for Whiteville Primary School; Carmen McQueen was elected from Edgewood Elementary.
Central Middle School’s honoree was Danaysia Powell; Whiteville High School’s was Olivia Scott and North Whiteville Academy’s was Amber Meares.
Beverly Turner, Federal Programs director, presented each school’s teacher of the year with a gift and congratulated the five on their achievements. “These are special women,” she said. Turner announced that the system’s overall teacher of the year for 2018-2019 was Carmen McQueen.
Board chairman Coleman Barbour acknowledged that each of the teachers was doing an important job by “giving the children the teaching they need.”
Each of the five teachers was asked to draw a slip of paper from a basket containing names of their school’s students who had achieved perfect attendance during the fourth quarter of the 2017-2018 school year. Winners were: WPS: J’siyah Wise, EES: Kaydy GomezGarcia, CMS: Albaro Baltazar, WHS: Kristina Murrell and NWA: Gavin McPherson.
